Peter: Among your many other fine points, let me lift up your observation, near the end, that a few of the new Demos do understand the challenge "posed by powerful plutocrats within." Would that that were so. We need broad-based and effective education that the US is really not a "democracy" at all. It is, truth to tell, and has been from the beginning of the Republic, a "plutocracy," where the rich have the overpowering institutional right ot govern, whatever the "people," the "demos," might be saying. David Korten makes this point powerfully in his fine new book "The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community." Highly recommended.

Peter,

This issue of a deeper corruption is not one that will be easily understood by or countered by the average family around the kitchen table trying to get the bills paid.

That is why it is incumbent up on the centrist Democtats to build strong coalitions with unions, public interest groups, professional associations, and progressive religious folks. Only can these groups help their members see what's at stake. Only these groups can get beneath the corporate noise machine to sound the clairon call. Hopefully the new leadership in Congress from both sides of the aisle can put differences aside to represent working Americans over the plutocrats. That is what the centrists promised to do. That is my prayer for today.
