Current Projects

Our Current Projects We work on a daily basis with other faith-based and secular organizations in the Los Angeles region to make sure we can keep our members — over 3000 progressive Christians in the greater Los Angeles area — completely informed on current justice struggles, events, opportunities, and church projects with our weekly e-mail alerts. You can sign up here!

In 2008, we are focused particularly on the following projects:

edp_logo_small_4.jpgThe Eighth Day Project. PCU officially launched its new environmental justice program, The Eighth Day Project, on April 1, 2007 with our first Conference on Faith, Activism, and Environmental Justice, with Bill McKibben as our keynote speaker. We organize hikes, liturgies, protests, educational events, and small-group work within congregations with the goal of nurturing Christian activism around issues of global warming, local food availability, greenspace, and urban environmental justice.

The Faith/Activism Collective. The FAITH/ACTIVISM COLLECTIVE is working to create a space for undergraduate activists seeking to integrate their faith and spiritual practice with their commitment to justice, equality, and dignity for all people-regardless of ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, religion, or citizenship. We want young people to reconnect with the roots of the faith that exemplify solidarity with and compassion towards the most vulnerable in society and dedicate ourselves to the struggle for justice at any cost.

Chapter Organizing. In 2007, we launched chapters in Orange County and Pomona Valley. In 2008, we’re developing new chapters in the Inland Empire and in the San Fernando Valley/Ventura County regions. Each chapter is staffed with an organizer, develops educational events, has its own local email list in addition to the main PCU email, and focuses on networking closely within local churches. For more information on chapter development, contact .

lgcm.pngLGBT Inclusion. Progressive Christians Uniting is working with groups such as California Faith for Equality to develop a strong religious voice in support of LGBT rights in the public sphere, as well as organizing a major national research study on LGBT inclusion in mainline churches. With screenings of For the Bible Tells Me So, and plans for support/networking groups, we’re also beginning a focused outreach to young GLBT Christians.
