People to Families

There is no ecological challenge that really stands apart from the challenge of creating racial and economic justice. Nowhere is this more true than in Greater Los Angeles. Here the impoverished neighborhoods and people of color bear the brunt of pollution, poor nutrition/food insecurity, lack of greenspace access, chronic joblessness, lack of affordable housing and public transportation.

Through the Eighth Day Project, PCU will plant the seeds of a campaign for better building among congregations and other church-related institutions. Inspired in part by Green For All’s vision, and working with our strategic allies, we will encourage faith-based institutions to open their doors to energy-efficiency audits and then follow through with recommended upgrades that will include green job creation. We want green building practices to become “the gold standard” for all communities of faith. We will also encourage communities of faith to act as the catalysts for other green jobs-centered construction and retrofitting projects within their areas of influence.

Other people-to-people priorities: the Eighth Day Project will send a delegation of faith leaders to green economy conferences as Green Faith Ambassadors. We will sponsor several regional Green Collar Economy book groups in order to build community and spur the green job movement forward.

We’ll continue to support our City of Los Angeles-funded Community Living Room Project at the Echo Park United Methodist Church, creating a welcoming, green space outside of the church where people can congregate and enjoy each other. We will also apply for additional grants to help sprout Community Living Rooms in other urban areas across the city.
