Help Us Close Guantanamo Now! - Write your Senator!
Dear Congressmember_____________________,
These are challenging times. Our country faces very real security threats – the “Christmas bomber” being one of the most recent examples of such threats. As we respond to these threats, however, I believe that it is important for us to remember who we are and what we, as a people, believe. We know that torture is wrong – our faith, our history, and our traditions teach us that. We must not forget it even when we experience fear and uncertainty. It is how we act in a crisis that demonstrates the quality of our character.
The detention center at Guantanamo Bay is a symbol of our country’s use of torture. What has happened there is a violation of our country’s deepest values. Closing it is necessary to put an end to a dark chapter in our nation’s history.
There are many practical arguments for closing Guantanamo. Its use as a symbol has inspired extremists to commit acts of terror against American soldiers and American civilians. The techniques that were used there radicalized some inmates, and prevented the successful prosecution of others. So long as Guantanamo remains open it will be difficult for us to win hearts and minds in the Middle East and revere the expansion of extremist groups.
But for me and for many other Americans, especially people of faith, the most important reason to close Guantanamo is that it is the right thing to do. We should not let terrorists weaken our commitment to our values.
Please work to ensure that the President has both the authority and the funds necessary to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay.
