Peter Gilbert and Steve James examine the state of the death penalty in Texas in this thought-provoking documentary filmed from the perspective of a Hunstville "death house" chaplain who witnessed nearly 100 executions over the course of his career. The film also dissects the controversial execution of Hunstville inmate Carlos De Luna, who died by lethal injection in 1989 despite evidence that suggested his innocence.

Easter In The San Gabriels

We will worship together in an Easter service, go on a moderate hike to experience God’s incredible creation and see proposed wilderness areas, share lunch, and write letters in support of protecting our beautiful mountains and rivers within the San Gabriels. It’s a Saturday morning you don’t want to miss.

Meet to carpool at 9am at:

100 N. Old San Gabriel Canyon Road

We will then carpool to the East Fork of the San Gabriel River:

for those driving the carpooling vehicles from the Rivers and Mountains Conservancy to the East Fork, we will have Angeles National Forest Adventure Passes for you. For those leaving cars at the Rivers and Mountains Conservancy, you won’t need an Adventure Pass.

Working to Confront U.S. Sponsored Torture

When history is written about the disclosure of the policies and practices of the United States in relation to torture of detainees since 9-11, Jameel Jaffer’s work will play a key role.

Mr. Jaffer is director of the National Security Project of the ACLU. In 2003 he and colleague Amrit Singh began to follow that was emerging concerning allegations of abuse of prisoners in U.S. custody. This led to the filing of a Freedom of Information Request to try to ascertain whether there was a broader pattern of abuse.

This ACLU vs. Dept of Defense litigation ultimately led to the release of government records relating to the treatment and detention of detainees held by the U.s. in Afghanistan, Iraq and Guantanamo.

This event is co-sponsored by PCU, the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California, the Los Angeles Region Religious Campaign Against Torture, KPFK, and Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace.
